Police chase car suspected to be involved in November shooting
Youngstown Police were involved in two pursuits of the same vehicle on Tuesday regarding a shooting that happened on N. Dunlap on November 25.
The shooting that occurred over a week ago reportedly involved a silver Jeep Cherokee with a 2-month expired license plate that was traced back to a 2023 Mazda.
The police report states the first chase began Tuesday at 6 p.m. when an officer saw a vehicle that matched the description of the one spotted at the shooting pulling into a drive-thru at the 2100 block of W. Midlothian Blvd.
According to the police report, the officer had previously run the vehicle's license plate numbers numerous times after it was alleged to be involved in the shooting of a man on November 25.
The chase began when the officer drove behind the vehicle to initiate a traffic stop in the parking lot of another establishment along W. Midlothian Blvd. The suspect began to speed away from the officer.
The pursuit carried over onto Hillman and Dewey streets before the officer stopped going after the suspect due to the "reckless nature." The suspected vehicle reportedly reached speeds well over 100 mph and, according to the police report, blew through red lights.
The second sighting of the same vehicle and chase occurred on Tuesday around 11 p.m. when Youngstown police spotted the vehicle at a drive-thru at the 1100 block of McGuffey Rd.
Police ran the license plate through their system to confirm a match between this vehicle and the one suspected in the shooting.
When police got behind the Jeep to perform a traffic stop the suspect began to flee from the scene.
Youngstown police pursued the vehicle through McGuffey and Wick until the suspect crossed into Girard, where the chase was broken off.
Police reported that the vehicle was driving in a similarly reckless way to the first chase. The vehicle reportedly reached speeds of 96 mph, nearly twice the posted 50 mph speed limit.
The victim of the November 25 shooting spoke with police at the hospital.
The Youngstown Police Department is still searching for this vehicle and the driver.
