While the Valley is in the middle of a harsh cold snap, the coldest temperature on record for the area will not be reached.

The National Weather Service has issued cold weather warnings for the entire area through Wednesday morning. Chief Meteorologist Eric Wilhelm and Meteorologist Andrew DiPaolo are expecting wind chills as low as 25 degrees below zero overnight and into Wednesday morning not only in our viewing area, but in much of northern Ohio and western Pennsylvania.

31 years ago, on January 19, 1994, the Youngstown-Warren Regional Airport recorded its lowest temperature since record-keeping began at that location by the National Weather Service in 1943. The actual temperature dropped to 22 degrees below zero and the wind chill was a very dangerous 60 degrees below zero.

The previous lowest temperature was minus 20, recorded on January 20 and 21, 1985.

Wednesday morning's temperature will be the lowest in the Valley since January 7, 2018 when the mercury hit minus 11. On February 16, 2015, the low was  13 degrees below zero.

The coldest month ever recorded in Youngstown was January 1977, with an average temperature of 10.2 degrees.

Remember to dress in layers, including a hat, face mask, and gloves, as frostbite can happen on exposed skin in 30 minutes, along with hypothermia.
