The Ohio EPA says they’re in the early stages of figuring out how widespread the contamination is from a wastewater spill in Canfield.

On Monday night, people living in the area heard from officials and were able to ask questions during an informational meeting - but many said they didn’t feel like they got anything out of it.

“I'm not really feeling safe,” one man said after the meeting.

In July of 2024, a mechanical issue at Material Sciences Corporation, a metal treatment plant, caused wastewater to spill into storm drains. The EPA released a 3,000 page report in December stating that they found "chemicals of concern" including cyanide and other carcinogens in the area including Sawmill Creek and near the Mill Creek MetroParks bike trail.

Fencing and pumps were put in to stop the waste water but now the Ohio EPA will continue to test that same area to get an understanding of what’s still left behind. Once they finalized their findings MSC will have to create a clean up plan.

The public will have a chance to comment on the clean up plan but Ohio EPA officials say that probably won’t come anytime soon.

In the meantime, some living nearby are weary about MSC and the area.

“Walking on the bike trail there's a smell of like paint thinner,” one man said. “The hope would be that they would be watched more closely maybe not just this company but other companies because if they see how easy they might get away with something, other companies might be in turn would feel as though they can get away with something as well.”
