Brookfield man charged with seven counts of endangering children

A Brookfield man is facing multiple charges, including seven counts of endangering children, following what police believe was an alcohol-fueled disturbance at his home on Valentine’s Day.
Brookfield Police were dispatched to the home on South Stateline Road last Friday in response to reports that Jeffrey Hume was allegedly intoxicated and destroying property. According to a police report, a caller identified as Hume’s child reported feeling unsafe due to Hume’s behavior. Police said they have responded to numerous previous calls involving Hume and alcohol.
When police got to the Stateline Road residence, they learned that Hume had left on foot. Officers believe that Hume went to a nearby Dollar General where they say he had likely gone to purchase more alcohol. Police found Hume at a nearby Circle K where they say Hume admitted to being involved in a fight with another man at the Dollar General.
Hume, who’ll turn 38 this week, admitted breaking windows and damaging property at his home, according to police. While officers were speaking with Hume, they learned that smoke was coming from his home, and the fire department had been called.
Taken back to his home by police, officers say Hume became disorderly, yelling at a firefighter. Further investigation revealed that Hume had allegedly damaged the home’s wood-burning furnace, creating a fire hazard and filling the house with smoke. Seven juveniles were in the home at the time, including four of Hume’s children, according to police.
Officers described the home as being in deplorable condition, with broken windows, garbage, and dog feces throughout.
As he was being driven to the Trumbull County Jail, police say Hume became combative, repeatedly striking his head against the cruiser’s partition and kicking the door. He also threatened to harm himself upon arrival at the jail. Officers required assistance from corrections officers to take Hume into custody.
Hume has pleaded “not guilty” to seven counts of endangering children, disorderly conduct, and criminal damaging.
As part of the conditions of his bond, Hume is ordered to have no contact with the children.
As of Wednesday, Hume remained jailed awaiting another court hearing in the case scheduled for Thursday.
