New Middletown community holding events to benefit family of fatal crash victims
21 News reported on Tuesday about a fatal crash in New Middletown that killed a mother and teen and left another juvenile in critical condition. Now the community is stepping in to help.
VFW Post 2799 in New Middletown will be donating all profits from all of its Friday fish dinners throughout Lent to the family of the mother and son who died in the crash on State Route 170 Monday night.
Guests can also make further contributions to the family by speaking to one of the post's bartenders.
The post's fish dinners will be every Friday during Lent from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. with dine-in and carryout options available.
In addition, operators of the Tiger's Table restaurant announced that they will donate 20% of all food and gift card sales to the family of the crash victims now through Sunday
Anticipating a large response, the restaurant at 10499 Main Street will serve a morning breakfast buffet on Saturday, March 8, and Sunday, March 9. The cost is $15 for adults and $10 for children.
Springfield Local Schools - which the two children involved in the crash attended - is having a t-shirt fundraiser with proceeds going to the family. The front of the shirt reads "A community united" and the back reads "Daff Family".
The Springfield Local Library has set out a box in it's lobby accepting non-perishable food donations for the family. They also have a station set up to make get well soon cards for 12-year-old Jayden.
The crash happened Monday, March 3 on SR-170 just north of New Middletown when a pickup truck driven by Walter Bolt drove left of center and struck a 2004 Honda Accord driven by Angela Brown, causing it to go off the road and overturn into a ditch.
Brown died at the scene. Her 15-year-old son Jason and 12-year-old son Jayden were in the back seat. Jason died at the hospital and a Go Fund Me page set up to help the family states Jayden is still in critical condition with several broken bones and a brain bleed.
Police say no one involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt. Charges are expected to be filed against Bolt.
Two Go Fund Me's have also been set up to help the Daff/Brown family. As of Wednesday afternoon one has raise more than $15,000 the other nearly $5,000.
