YOUNGSTOWN - A Warren man ordered to undergo mental health treatment after vandalizing sixteen religious statues at a Youngstown church has been sent back to jail.

Police say Caleb Vancampen, now 25, caused $100,000 in damage to statues outside of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in February 2021. Some of the statues appeared to be struck by bricks and others were decapitated.

After pleading guilty to criminal damaging, VanCampen was ordered to take part in a one-to-five-year intervention program that involves counseling and treatment, instead of going to jail.

Vancampen was booked into the Trumbull County Jail on January 8 for failing to attend a hearing in Warren Municipal Court on charges filed by State Troopers for an incident back in September.

While the court dismissed misdemeanor counts of DUI and failure to control, a felony charge of drug possession is being considered by the Trumbull County Grand Jury.

On Wednesday, Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Judge decided that since Vancampen had not lived up to the requirements of the intervention program, he would be sentenced to serve 146 days in jail.  Vancampen has already spent 399 days behind bars.

In July 2023, Vancampen admitted to another probation violation and was ordered by the court to continue treatment.
