A major bridge closure in Boardman is creating headaches for both commuters and emergency crews. The Walker Mill overpass on Interstate 680 is now closed indefinitely after a garbage truck’s hydraulic arms struck the bridge early this morning, causing significant structural damage.

According to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), several steel beams underneath the bridge deck were damaged, forcing officials to shut it down for safety.

“We’re evaluating repair options before bringing in a contractor,” said ODOT spokesperson Justin Chesnik. “Right now, there’s no set timeline for reopening.”

The closure is causing traffic disruptions for the 4,000 vehicles that use the overpass daily. Drivers are being rerouted via South Avenue, U.S. 224, State Route 170, and North Lima Road, increasing travel times in the area.

But it’s not just commuters adjusting—first responders are also impacted. With Boardman Fire crews now facing longer response times to neighborhoods east of the bridge, Poland Fire has stepped in to assist with emergency calls.

“Everything from the bridge toward Poland will now be handled by Poland Fire,” said Boardman Assistant Fire Chief William Glaser. “Their response times are nearly the same as ours, so residents won’t notice a difference.”

While ODOT has not provided a timeline for repairs, Chesnik says crews will work as quickly as possible once a repair plan is in place.

“Once we determine the repair plan, we’ll bring in a contractor and get to work,” he said.

In the meantime, drivers are urged to allow extra travel time, and emergency responders will continue adjusting their coverage until the bridge is reopened.
