21 WFMJ archives  / April  9, 1987 | Four-year-old Nicholas Dota got a boost from his dad, Tony, to check out the engine of a Coba gunship helicopter at Poland High School 38 years ago.  The aircraft, which belonged to the Army's 101st Airborne Division based at Fort Campbell, Ky., was making stops at several schools in northeast Ohio.

2000: U.S. Sen. Mike DeWine, R-Ohio, says he will back a proposal by U.S. Rep. James A Traficant Jr., D-17th, to authorize $35 million for a downtown Youngstown convocation center. 

The health technologies Tech Prep team representing Choffin Career Center placed first in the Northeastern Ohio competition at Kent State University. Team members were Danyell York, Kim Morris, and LaFaunde Saulsberry. 

The Better Business Bureau of Mahoning County warns residents to beware of criminals posing as Census 2000 workers. Census workers will not ask questions about bank accounts or credit cards. 

 

1985: The U.S. Immigration Service is closing its Trumbull County office, meaning immigrants living there must go to Cleveland to apply for citizenship and testing and interviews. 

Major League Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth attended the Cincinnati Reds' home opener against Montreal, marking the first full season for Peter Rose as both manager and player on the team. 

The Mahoning County Board of Elections will mail absentee ballots to 200 voters who applied for them, most from Youngstown or Struthers. 

 

1975: The Warren Education Association files suit against the Warren Board of Education and Superintendent Richard Boyd, alleging they undermined the WEA and asked for $400,000. 

A Bexley Drive couple files a $300,000 lawsuit in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court Against Wyeth Laboratories, claiming the woman's partial blindness is a side effect of the firm's oral contraceptives. 

 

1950: Falling snow and freezing winds give a yuletide atmosphere to  Easter shopping in downtown Youngstown.

Mahoning County reservoirs are dumping billions of gallons of water into the Mahoning River to remove it, even though Valley industries would like to keep it for the summer dry season. 

Two Youngstown high school students, Betsy Ross of Chaney and Ted Kesselman of Rayen, were honored for their participation in the 10th annual Eastern Ohio National Forensic League's mock congress at Chaney High School.
