Liberty Township Police Chief Toby Meloro will be retiring at the end of the year.

According to the meeting minutes for the Liberty Township Trustees' April meeting, a motion was unanimously approved accepting Meloro's retirement as police chief. His last day on the job will be December 19.

When asked for comment regarding his retirement, Meloro said he still has about seven months left in his position and there are still some things he'd like to do before he leaves office.

According to Liberty Township's website, Meloro began serving on the police since 1993. He was appointed as interim police chief in 2018 following the retirement of former police chief Rich Tisone.

Meloro's appointment as chief drew some controversy in 2018 due to accusations that he did not properly investigate the death of a woman whose body was found on a tractor partially submerged in a pond on a farm on Shannon Road in 2017.

A lawsuit was filed regarding this matter in 2019.

There is no word yet on who will be replacing Meloro as police chief following his retirement.
