YOUNGSTOWN - The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation issued a statement expressing horror Sunday after a brutal firebombing in Boulder, Colorado, during a march for Israeli hostages. The attack occurred on the evening of Shavuot, a two-day Jewish holiday.

"Our hearts go out to everyone involved, and we pray for the quick recovery of those injured," the statement read.

The statement noted, "We don’t yet have all the details of what happened, though video footage of the suspect has emerged suggesting extreme Jewish hatred as a motive." The federation pledged to keep its community updated as more information becomes available.

Boulder police identified the suspect as Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, of El Paso County. He was arrested shortly after officers responded to the Pearl Street Mall at 1:26 p.m. Sunday.

Eight victims — four women and four men ranging in age from 52 to 88 — were taken to Denver metro hospitals.

The FBI is investigating the incident as a targeted act of terrorism, working with the Boulder Police Department to process the crime scene and gather evidence. FBI Denver Special Agent in Charge Mark Michalek stated, "We stand in full solidarity with those targeted. And we will continue to ensure that justice is pursued swiftly, support is provided to victims and their communities, and preventative action is taken to protect everyone’s safety."

Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn acknowledged the community's fear but urged unity. "Boulder has recovered from acts of violence before and we will again recover," Redfearn said. "I urge this community to come together. Now is not the time to be divisive."
