BOARDMAN TWP., Ohio - UPS has confirmed to 21 News that it plans to close its longtime hub where packages are sorted for delivery in Boardman as the company consolidates its operations across the US.

A UPS representative confirmed plans to close the Karago Avenue facility off Market Street on August 22.

Teamster Local 377 Secretary-Treasurer/Principal Officer Ralph Cook told 21 News that the approximately 65 employees who work at the facility will be offered jobs at other facilities, but more information is expected to be given to employees in about a week.

Cook said that employees were informed on Friday of the closing.

"Our employees are extremely important to us, and we understand the impact this may have on them and their families," said UPS spokesperson Karen Tomaszewski in an email. "We are working to place as many employees as possible in other positions. We will work with those who may be impacted throughout the process to provide support."

UPS announced in 2024 that it was looking to close up to 200 facilities and in 2025 announced a workforce reduction and additional facility closures as part of a network reconfiguration plan the company announced earlier this year.

A UPS spokesperson sent 21 News a statement that can be read below.

"As announced on our Q1 earnings call, we are executing the largest network reconfiguration in UPS history. This strategic initiative will optimize the capacity of our network to align with expected volume levels and enhance productivity through additional automation. The reconfiguration will impact positions, and we are committed to supporting our employees throughout this process. While our building footprint is changing, our record of reliable pickup and delivery is not. We remain committed to providing industry-leading service to customers in more than 200 countries and territories around the world."

UPS said it is working to place affected employees in other positions at other locations.
