According to a news release, the Healthy Community Partnership's Healthy Food Action Team is launching a new initiative called "Plant Power! A Food Sovereignty Initiative".

The initiative, according to the release, aims to help community members grow their own fresh foods through a free plant and seed giveaway.

Education on growing at home is also offered as part of the initiative.

Throughout the month of June, members of the Healthy Food Action Team will be distributing free plants at farmers markets and community events in Warren and Youngstown, according to the release.

Plants that are being given away, according to the release, include:

  • Nasturtiums
  • Marigolds
  • Basil
  • Kale
  • Tomatoes
  • Okra
  • Sage
  • Collards

All plants being given away were purchased from locally owned and operated green houses, according to the release.

Community members can pick up a plant, while supplies last, at the following events and locations:

  • June 14 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Quinby Park Juneteenth Celebration, 525 Austin Avenue SW, Warren
  • June 17 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Warren Farmers Market, 347 North Park Avenue in Downtown Warren next to the SCOPE Center
  • June 22 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Seed Donation Event, located at the Pocket Park at the corner of McGuffey and Berkeley, Youngstown
  • June 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cornerstone Collective Market, located at Glenwood Corridor Parking Lot, 2649 Glenwood Avenue, Youngstown

Additionally, at the Warren Farmers Market on June 17, the team will be raffling off several $25 gift cards for use at the Warren Farmers Market during the plant giveaway.

The aim of the initiative is to empower community members to eat healthier and support their local food system, according to the release.
