AUSTINTOWN, Ohio - Instead of a sleigh, the gifts came in a Mary Kay car.

And instead of elves, those distributing the gifts were trainers and staff from Fitness Together.

On Wednesday, they donated presents for one hundred residents at Briarfield Senior Living Facility in Austintown.

"We're so fortunate at Fitness Together.  We have so many generous clients there, so really it was our clients that are responsible for all this," explained Fitness Together owner Erin Mellinger. "We put together a raffle and we raised enough money to be able to adopt 100 grandparents."

They brought the gifts to the residents, and spent time talking and singing Christmas carols.

"We have people that donate sometimes, but not for all the residents," said Briarfield Administrator Jennifer Connolly. "So we are just so happy that everybody was able to get a gift."

Adopt-A-Grandparent is a program organized by Mary Kay consultants to connect the community with people in nursing homes who might not otherwise have a Christmas. It's happening across the country this holiday season.

For Briarfield residents, it was an early holiday surprise.

"I was really excited!" said resident Janet Freisen. "And they're beautifully wrapped! That's so nice of them to give them to us!"

"They were tremendous!" added resident Donna Adams. "Mint body lotion, you can't ask for anything nicer than that!"

A surprise that some say, made their holiday special.

"Oh yes, lots more special," agreed resident Lawyer Williams. "I wasn't looking for nothing, I wasn't looking for nothing."

For the businesses, churches and residents who volunteer to adopt a grandparent, it makes for a special Christmas for them, too.

"A lot of people think about kids this time of year," said Mellinger. "But there's a lot of people out there that need the visitors and need to feel that Christmas joy."
