CORTLAND, Ohio - A local candle company is becoming the toast of Hollywood.
Sydney Candles were given to celebrities at this year's Golden Globes and soon they are going to be part of the ultimate awards show.
The Sydney Candle Company is a local, family operation. Just seven people make and distribute the scented candles out of a small building in Cortland.
Owner Becki Olejnik got the idea to make candles eight years ago when she visited a candle maker. She thought she could make even better ones and it looks like she has.
What makes them unique? They're made out of soy.
"'Soy wax actually burns at a lower temperature. It burns longer, cleaner, it's biodegradable and it's toxin free, " Olejnik said.
And you'd be surprised to know just what regular candles have in them.
Becki's father, Richard Conti, says "'It does give off 11 toxins, three of them carcinogens, one is benzene. There are no toxins given off in a soy product."
Recently producers at the Golden Globes found Sydney online and contacted them to get candles to all the nominees.
"They said it was different; something unique. They really liked the product. They liked the look of it. Celebrities ask each year for a candle to be in the gift bag," Olejnik said.
They were a hit. So much so, the candles will be going to the Oscar presenters and nominees next month.
The Sydney family is very excited about getting the international attention.
By the way, the candles are named after Becki's daughter.
Right now there are 54 different fragrances. Candles start at around $15 and can be found locally at Kraynaks and Gorant candy stores.
