Firefighters prevent fire from reaching nearby gas tanks in Mercer County

BARKEYVILLE, Pennsylvania - It was a bad situation that could have been much worse.
A fire in Barkeyville, just outside of Mercer County, consumed a semi-truck repair shop connected to a gas station at the intersection of Route 8 and interstate 80.
The blaze erupted before 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
The business was fully engulfed when firefighters from several departments arrived on the scene.
The flames spread throughout the building damaging the garage and offices. Crews were able to contain the fire to the garage and prevented flames from igniting the adjoining CITGO gas station where two tanks filled with diesel and kerosene fuel were stored.
Route 8 was shut down for hours until the fire was brought under control.
No injuries were reported.
Fire Chief Gerald Rae says people working in the garage unsuccessfully tried to put out the flames themselves.
"They were working in the building and believe a spark or something from a grinder lit a drain on fire that might have had some flammable liquid in it," Rae said. "They tried putting it out themselves with a fire extinguisher, but were unsuccessful. That's when they called the fire department."
Chief Rae said that back in 1979 there was an explosion in the same garage where a person died a few days later.
