Salvation Army campaign kicks off with a challenge

Updated:

BOAARDMAN, Ohio - The Mahoning County Salvation Army  annual Red Kettle campaign kicked off on Thursday with a challenge for local businesses.

Quaker Steak and Lube in Boardman chipped in $1,000 toward the organization's goal of $305,000 this year.

The restaurant hopes its donation will inspire other businesses to do the same.

"They are calling on businesses and organizations and leaders here in the Valley to follow suit," said Major Elijah Kahn, Area Services Coordinator for the Salvation Army.

Last year, more than $343,000 in donations were collected in 2011.

Donations are accepted by red kettle volunteers and online on the organization's website.
