YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – On Saturday, Youngstown State University, United Way and PNC Bank teamed up to provide free help for tax filers.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or VITA program provides trained business students from YSU's Lariccia School of Accounting and Finance, along with professional volunteers, to help taxpayers.

The services, along with electronic filing, are free to taxpayers who make less than $60,000 a year.

"Doing a great service for the community and our students are able to prepare them. They've gone through IRS training and some of the students are actually able to take it for credit. So they get course credit and they get experience," said Ray Shaffer, Director of the Lariccia School of Accounting and Finance.

The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley website has information on locations, dates and sites that are open this tax filing season.

Last year more than 3,000 thousand people in Mahoning County used the free tax sites which brought them three million in refunds and fee savings.
