Five fire departments called to lumber company in Hubbard

Posted: Updated:

HUBBARD TOWNSHIP, Ohio - Five fire departments respond to a blaze at Babcock Lumber Company in Hubbard Township, for what was originally believed to be a three-alarm blaze.

The initial call came in at 10 a.m. and it was reported that flames were shooting through the roof.

Doug DeTal, the shop manager inside building number two, known as the Counter Top Shop, spotted the flames.

"I yelled fire, and made sure everybody heard it. We knew what to do at that point. Everybody grabbed their stuff and ran like rats to get out of there. I grabbed the fire extinguishers and knocked it back a little bit, and tried to assess it real quick," DeTal says.

Fire investigators determined it was possible that a light fixture ignited a dust bin. The flames did reach the attic area of the building.

The company makes laminate counter tops inside the facility, and Babcock Lumber is also a wholesale lumber company that supplies lumber yards.

General Manager, Dave Ehrler is just thankful everyone is safe.

"It was mainly a small fire contained in a certain area and it didn't spread throughout the building at all, just mostly smoke," Ehrler says.

If necessary, the company has the option of moving about 40 counter top orders to a Pittsburgh location for completion. At this point, they're not sure that will be necessary.

Damage is estimated at between $10,000 to $15,000.
