AKRON, Ohio (AP) - The University of Akron is taking steps to filter out students who are not ready for college.
University trustees have approved a renewed effort to cut down on the number of students taking remedial course work that won't count toward a degree.
The Akron Beacon Journal reports that the students filtered out would be referred to area community colleges before being admitted to University of Akron.
The university started redirecting remedial students to community colleges last year.
The new policy uses a combination of high-school grade-point average and ACT scores to identify students as preparatory, emergent or college-ready.
