Recreation restricted at Ohio forest amid drilling

Posted: Updated:

NELSONVILLE, Ohio (AP) - Recreational activities are being restricted at Wayne National Forest as oil and gas drilling proceeds and coal mining is explored at the southeastern Ohio park.

A spokesman says an order signed April 30 is intended to protect both the park's natural resources and visitors.

The prohibitions affect campfires, off-highway vehicle operation, camping, hunting, boating and other activities.

Rules limit campers to staying 14 days within any 30-day period and prohibit mass camping involving more than eight people and three camping units at a site. New restrictions also apply to alcohol, drugs, public nudity and fireworks.

A complete list is available at the park's website.

A public comment period is under way on proposed coal mining at the park. Shale drilling began there last year.
