Fire evacuates Vindicator building

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The building that houses local newspaper The Vindicator's operations had to be evacuated Tuesday afternoon when a fire broke out in an air handling unit.

The small fire was mostly extinguished by the building's sprinkler system by the time fire crews arrived.

The air unit where the fire occured, was just above the presses, the machines that print the paper, causing the press room to fill with smoke.

Although the fire was small, damage from smoke and water could be concerns moving forward.

"Right now everything's shut down, the system's shut down, the water's turned off," O'Neill said. "We have to try to get some of that water backed out of there some how and get the smoke removed."

The general manager of The Vindicator, Mark Brown, tells 21 News no delays are expected in delivery of the paper Wednesday morning.
