State senator co-sponsors bill for stiffer penalties for criminals

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - State lawmakers are trying to come up with solutions to reduce crime in Ohio.

At a safety summit in Youngstown on Saturday, law enforcement emphasized the need for stiff penalties for anyone who intimidates or tries to tamper with a witness.

State Senator Joe Schiavoni says lawmakers are working on laws to address that problem as well as ways to deter repeat offenders.

Schiavoni says that individuals who intimidate at witness in a murder trial should be jailed for a substantial amount of time.  He also said that people convicted of multiple offenses for violent crimes with firearms should received stiffer penalties.

"These are the people we need to get off the streets," Schiavoni said.

The bill would impose a seven year mandatory sentence for criminals convicted of two violent felonies that are arrested and convicted of having a firearm in their possession.

The bill is sponsored by Senator Hughes from Columbus and co-sponsored by Schiavoni.
