Ohio attorney general warns of grant scams

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine is warning families and students to be on guard for financial scams such as phony grant offers in the back-to-school season.

DeWine says in a release that dozens of Ohioans reported losing hundreds of dollars to such scams in the past year.

The attorney general says requiring someone to pay money to receive a grant, scholarship, or job indicates it's probably a scam.

More than 60 Ohioans have filed complaints about grants in the last 12 months. Half reported losing money, with the average loss around $1,000.

DeWine says a typical scam involves a caller saying that you've won a government grant. But they then ask for $200 to $600 to be sent to another country to receive the grant.
