Youngstown police arrest man for allegedly choking dog

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - A 20 year old man is jailed after residents of a west side neighborhood claim he was choking a dog as a form of discipline.

According to a report filed by city police, passers by at Belle Vista and Mahoning Avenues spotted Jacob Sanders hanging a dog by a collar as he pulled the dog along the road Wednesday afternoon.

Witnesses who objected tell officers that they saw Sanders cursing loudly, saying he could discipline his dog as he saw fit.

When police caught up with Sanders near Belle Vista and Wehr Street, they say pulled his arms away from officers as they tried to handcuff him, and say he refused to get into the police cruiser.

Sanders is charged with animal cruelty and resisting arrest.

Dave Nelson of the Mahoning County Dog Warden's office tells 21 news that the dog has a gash on it's neck caused by the collar.

The dog ran away from the scene and is still roaming the area of Calvary Cemetery.

Nelson describes the dog as a black Labrador with a patch of white fur.

Police say that further investigation revealed that Sanders is listed as a missing person from Bakersfield, California.
