YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Surrounded by supporters, Youngstown Councilwoman Janet Tarpley on Tuesday filed nominating petitions to run as a Democrat for the 58th Ohio House District seat.

Tarpley has been representing the city's sixty ward since 2007 when she was first elected.

Tarpley told 21 news that her constituents could benefit from her experience. "If anybody knows anything about me, they know I fight for what the people need. And so the people in the district  understand if I represent them, they're going to be heard loud and clear down at the State House.", said Tarpley

The house seat will become vacant when Representative Robert Hagan's current term expires.

By law, Hagan is not allowed to seek another term as representative because of state mandated term limits.  The Democrat has expressed interest in running for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Republican  Rob Portman.

Hagan's wife, Michelle Lepore Hagan filed petitions to run for her husbands position last week.

The 58th District encompasses Youngstown Campbell, Struthers, Coitsville, Lowellville and most of Austintown.
