YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio- It's the merriest time of the year, but the cup of coffee that keeps you warm or the glass of wine that brings you holiday cheer can also bring some unwanted red spots.

Nearly 16 million Americans suffer from persistent facial redness, or rosacea, a condition that's often exacerbated this time of year because of certain drinks, foods and the weather.

"The winter weather really does a number on our skin.  It causes issues with dryness, irritation, stinging and burning on the skin.  It can worsen facial redness that many people have," said dermatologist Dr. Mark Jackson.

Dr. Jackson says by selecting rosacea-friendly meals and avoiding certain skin care products, people can enjoy the holidays without having to worry about rosy cheeks.

He recommends avoiding hot spices such as black and red pepper, paprika and cayenne.  Hot liquids and alcohol, especially red wine, can also cause flare ups.  Dr. Jackson also recommends avoiding deodorant soaps and other skin care products that contain menthol, witch hazel and peppermint.

If those suggestions don't do the trick, Dr. Jackson encourages a trip to the dermatologist.  They are able to prescribe medications, such as Mirvaso, which Dr. Jackson says treats persistent redness.

"The vessels in patients with rosacea are more open or what we say, dilated, and this medicine actually works topically to decrease the size of the vessels to decrease the redness that is there," said Dr. Jackson.

Dr. Jackson encourages people to use moisturizer that contains SPF.  He says, even though it's winter, the sun's rays can still cause skin damage.
