Salem road crews conserve scant salt supplies

Posted: Updated:

SALEM, Ohio - The road salt situation in the city of Salem is a classic example of supply and demand.

City Services Director Ken Kenst tells 21 News that the road department is currently coping with a shortage of the material used to melt ice on local roadways.

Kenst says the salt shortage is occurring because the city is not getting timely deliveries from it's supplier, Morton Salt. He says that Morton prioritizes it's deliveries.  The Ohio Department of Transportation is first in line, followed by counties, and then municipalities.

The road department will still salt intersections, hills, and curves, but will be conserving supplies until further notice.

Kenst says he does not know what is causing the shortage, or how long it will last.
