Humility of Mary offering free colorectal screening tests to people uninsured or underinsured

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Next month is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and Humility of Mary Health Partners isn't waiting until then to start educating its patients.

This month and next month, the hospital system is offering free colorectal screening tests to its patients who are either uninsured or underinsured.

The take home test kit consists of a small vile with a threaded stick. Patients use the stick to obtain a stool sample then mail the vile back to the hospital where it is screened.

Experts are looking for blood in the stool, one of the signs of colon cancer.

Colorectal cancer is diagnosed in about 140,000 people each year.

"Typically you won't have a symptom until colon cancer has moved on. So, that is why colonoscopies are so important. This kit doesn't not take the place of a colonoscopy. I want to make sure everyone knows that," said Andela Ritz from Humility of Mary Health Partners.

Results from the test are available within 10 days. If you test negative, you'll receive a letter in the mail. If it's positive, someone will call you.

You can pick up the tests Monday through Friday at either St. Joe's at the Eastwood Mall, St. Elizabeth Boardman Cancer Center, or in the lobby of St. Elizabeth downtown on February 25th from 2 to 4 p.m.
