Survey shows engagement of YSU students

Posted: Updated:

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The results of a new survey that asked Youngstown State University students how engaged they are at the university was released on Wednesday.

It's a survey students take as a freshman and then as a senior at colleges and universities all over America. It's called the National Survey of Student Engagement.

What it really looks for is what the student is really getting out of the university learning experience.

Where did YSU rank highest? The survey shows YSU students get more personal time with faculty members than most other universities.

"Because a lot of classes are taught by graduate teaching assistants, but at YSU students have a lot more opportunities to work one on one with faculty both in their classes and in their research, so that's a very positive and unique aspect of YSU," said Hillary Fuhrman, Youngstown State University Director of Assessment.

What are students saying that YSU lacks the most? That's in a category called supportive campus environment.

"For example our first year students say they may not participate in a lot of on campus activates compared to our peer institutions. There can be reasons for that. One, we are a pretty strong commuter campus," Fuhrman said.

A new director of student activities was hired last year and she tells us the university is trying to address those issues.
