Hundreds of swans migrate to northern Trumbull County

Posted: Updated:

NORTH BLOOMFIELD, Ohio - Swans are flocking to a small pond in northern Trumbull County like never before.

Those who live in North Bloomfield have seen dozens of swans before, but never hundreds like those migrating to a Mosquito Lake pond on State Route 87 between Penniman Road and North Park Avenue.

Jamie Emmert is a Communication Specialist for the Ohio Division of Wildlife at Mosquito Lake, "It's definitely quite a spectacle. We definitely encourage people to go out and look, because you may not see something like this for quite some time."

... According to the Ohio Division of Wildlife, this species is known as Tundra Swans, a highly migratory species that typically doesn't hang around Ohio year round --- but passes through in the Spring and Fall.

"There have been reports that they have been flying northward the last few days in preparation for breeding season, but obviously they're finding a lot more ice the further north they go. And they need open water to be comfortable and to feed, so they've turned around, and headed back southward a little bit and they're currently staging at Mosquito Lake among other places," Emmert said.

Water foul have had a rough go of it this winter because it's been so cold, and the water has been frozen for an extended period of time. Making it difficult for Tundra Swans to get to the aquatic vegetation and fish they most often want to eat.

"They'll continue northward when weather improves and start nesting season," Emmert said.
