Climate group to sink $100M in 7 races in 2014

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Environmentalist billionaire Tom Steyer is unveiling plans to spend $100 million this year to make climate change a make-or-break issue in seven Senate and gubernatorial races.

Steyer's NextGen Climate Action says it will back Democrats and attack Republicans running for governor in Pennsylvania, Florida and Maine. The super PAC will also spend on Senate races in New Hampshire, Iowa, Colorado and Michigan.

The group says Steyer will personally spend at least $50 million. NextGen plans to raise another $50 million from likeminded donors.

The announcement comes as Democrats are working to counteract a deluge of spending by conservative outside groups.

The group wants voters to see climate change as a matter of right versus wrong. NextGen will also localize its ads to highlight how climate change is affecting individual states.
