Hearing held for Austintown Fitch teacher

Posted: Updated:

An Austintown Fitch teacher who is under suspension for an alleged improper relationship with a female senior high school student should know more about his future next week.

Superintendent Vince Colaluca confirmed to 21 News that Social Studies teacher John Dietz had an opportunity to tell his side of the story during a pre-disciplinary hearing held on Thursday.

Colaluca says that the police has been notified, but currently the investigation is being handled internally.

Details of the allegations have not been made public, but Colaluca says the school board should have a decision on the matter by next week.

According to the Code of Professional Conduct from the Ohio Department of Education, educators shall maintain a professional relationship with all students at all times, both in and out of the classroom.

Soliciting, encouraging, engaging or consummating an inappropriate relationship with a student or minor is considered conduct unbecoming of a teacher.

Punishment for violations of the code range from suspension to revocation of a teaching license.
