Website identifies recalled GM vehicles

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - General Motors says it's preparing to re-call more than 29-thousand Chevy Cruze compact cars, because of a possible air bag problem.

GM says the problem involves an incorrect part made by Japanese supplier Takata Corp which might cause the driver side air bag not to inflate properly in a crash. It affects some 2013 and 2014 Cruze models. Of the 29-thousand vehicles, about 2,700 are said to be still in dealer inventories.

Spokesman Jim Cain says a recall could be issued as soon as Friday. "Some of those are in dealer stock and remain subject to the stop sale. Others have been delivered to customers and we're working through right now our strategy to go out and repair them.", said Cain.

There is a special web site where consumers can find if their GM vehicle is on any recall list. All your need is your vehicle identification number.

"They can input their VIN right into the screen and it will indicate to them whether there's a recall or not on the vehicle. It goes into detail and explains what the recall is if there is one.", said Jason Bumgardner of Sweeney Chevrolet.

There has been no disruption in production of the Cruze, which is built in Lordstown. "At Lordstown, there's no impact on production at the plant. Most of the vehicles that are in dealer inventory are not affected", said Cain.

The recall would come as Lordstown begins a scheduled two-week shutdown for model changeover. The Cruze is GM's top selling car with monthly North American sales of 25-to-35-thousand cars.
