New Ohio plate raises awareness of POW/MIA issues

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Ohio motorists can now buy a POW/MIA license plate to help raise awareness of service members missing in action.

The plate, which features the black MIA/POW logo and "Never Forgotten" across the bottom, is one of about 70 specialty plates available in the state.

State Sen. John Eklund, a Chardon Republican who sponsored the legislation to create the plate, tells The Columbus Dispatch he was surprised that Ohio didn't already have a POW/MIA tag, since most states do.

The plate costs $35. Of that, $25 will be transferred to the state's Military Injury Relief Fund, which awards $500 payments to service members injured while serving in overseas wars.

The bill that includes the MIA/POW plate also created a Statehouse license plate and a Disabled American Veteran plate.
