Historic bell stolen from Liberty

Posted: Updated:
LIBERTY TWP, Ohio - Someone stole the Liberty bell.  It's not the famous one on display in Philadelphia.  This bell, taken from Liberty Township, has a connection to the industrial history of the Mahoning Valley.

A township resident tells investigators that she discovered a large cast iron bell missing from the back yard of her Wildfern Drive home last week.

The homeowner tells 21 News that the bell came from a locomotive used at the former Sheet and Tube steel mill in Youngstown. The bell was given to her family by and acquaintance sixty years ago.

The resident says the bell was quite large and heavy, weighing several hundred pounds.  She beleives whoever took it probably needed help, because the bell was mounted high on a pole.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the police department at (330) 759-1511 or (330) 759-1315 Ext. 215.
