Animal Charity seeks help to ease overcrowding

Posted: Updated:
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -

If you are thinking of bringing a furry new friend into your family, now might be the perfect time to do so.

The Animal Charity Humane Society in Youngstown is reaching out to volunteers and pet-parents hopeful to help with overcrowding at the shelter.

The facility is now housing around 40 dogs and 23 cats – a far cry over the comfortable capacity of 20. Due to this, the society is unable to take in any owner releases or anymore animals of those who have passed away or been arrested.

Humane Society President Jason Cooke said there is a great need for adoption and for volunteers. He said volunteers can make a big difference when it comes to taking care of the animals and making sure they are well.

“We start walking the dogs from six to nine at night. We try to do that five days a week,” Cooke said. “An extra walk, a few extra hours of someone playing with them; that means the world to the dogs.”

Volunteers can pick up an application at the shelter or online at AnimalCharity.org.

Those looking to adopt can follow Animal Charity on Facebook where they post pictures and videos of adoptable animals or go to the charity's website. They can also drop in at the shelter to observe and play with the animals before making their choice.

If you are looking for a new feline friend, the society has even partnered with PetSmart to try to find homes for cats.

For those who are looking for a temporary companion or can't support the medical costs of a new pet, there is also another option: fostering an animal. The foster caregiver would be responsible for housing and caring for the animal, but the Humane Society will help out on the medical front.

Cooke said for some people, it can be a great option.

“It's a win-win situation,” Cooke said. “The animal gets a new home and we cover the medical costs.”

And if the foster parent wants to adopt the animal, they get first priority once the animal's foster case is cleared.

If you'd like to help, but are not seeking to adopt, foster, or volunteer, you can go to the charity's website to make a monetary donation or to view their “wish list” of items the shelter needs.
