CLEVELAND, Ohio -

Two executives of a Canfield construction company are going to prison for violating federal tax laws.

A federal judge on Thursday sentenced David and Scott Bonamase to 21 months in prison, followed by three years probation.

Scott Bonamase of Streetsboro, the owner of A. Bonamase Construction, was convicted of failing to pay taxes and making false statements to the government. 31 other charges were dismissed. In addition to the prison term, Bonamase has to pay the government more than $138,000 restitution.

The company's project engineer, David Bonamase of Canfield was convicted of failing to pay taxes. 36 other charges were dropped.

The original indictment issued in 2012 alleged that A. Bonamase Contracting, Inc. employed between 10 to 25 employees for the years 2006 through 2009. During that time period, Scott Bonamase was accused of under-reporting employee gross wages to the Internal Revenue Service and Scott and prosecutors say that David Bonamase omitted payments to employees in the books and records of the company.

The indictment also alleged that A. Bonamase Contracting, Inc. had contracts with government agencies that required certified payroll reports to verify that they were paying the prevailing wage. Scott and David Bonamase were accused of willfully falsifying, signing, and submitting certified payroll reports to the government. Scott and David Bonamase certified that their employees were being paid the prevailing when, in fact, they were paid less, according to the indictment.
