YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - If some of the gifts you found under tree Christmas morning don't quite fit or don't suit your taste, your are not alone.

A survey conducted by the National Retail Federation found that the average person returned nearly four holiday gifts last year.

That means that you could be heading to the shopping centers again, or packing up unwanted items for shipment back to the online retailer.

Under Ohio law, sellers are not required to have any specific type of return policy. Some stores charge restocking fees, which are charged for returning an item to the shelves.

Ohio law does not prohibit restocking fees. However, if a store has a refund or restocking fee policy, they must be clearly and conspicuously posted.

That knowledge likely won't help the gift recipient, but it is important to know a retailer's policies for those wishing to exchange an item, get a refund, or obtain a store credit.

Some of the basic information you'll need is whether or not a receipt is required and how long after the purchase can an item be returned. It is also a good idea to bring along a valid photo ID when you go to the store.

Macy's

Bring back item at any time with receipt and receive a full refund in original form of payment, regardless of the original purchase date.

With no receipt, Macy's will look up the purchase information with an account number, a customer return label or gift registry number. If they are able to access the receipt, customer will receive a refund to the original account or a store credit.

Those without Proof of Purchase can obtain a store credit for the item's lowest selling price within the last 180 days.

Dillard's

Store will issue a refund in the form and amount of the original tender paid (including sales tax) or Dillard's will issue a Merchandise Credit at the customer's choice, when each of the following three conditions has been met:

Merchandise will be accepted for return for thirty calendar days from the date of purchase, except as otherwise stated on the face of the receipt or at point of sale.

The merchandise must be in its original, unused condition unless there is a manufacturer's defect.

The merchandise must be accompanied by either the original Dillard's Receipt or the original Dillard's Proof of Purchase Label.

Refunds for check purchases will have a ten day waiting period before a cash or check refund is issued.

Dicks Sporting Goods

Offers returns within 90 days of purchase.

Original sales receipt or packing slip required for all returns or exchanges.

Refunds will be in the original form of payment.

Customer must bring valid photo ID to the store.

Returns and exchanges should be in the original packaging.

Returns and exchanges without a receipt or packing slip will be offered store credit for lowest price

Kohl's

To return or exchange an item purchased in-store, bring the item and receipt to the Customer Service Desk of any Kohl's store.

There are no time restrictions for returns.

No receipt is needed for Kohl's Charge purchases.

Walmart

Items must be returned in the original manufacturer's packaging.

Most items must be returned within 90 days of purchase. However, purchases from some departments including Electronics items, have a return window of 15 or 30 days after December 26.

If available, bring the packing slip or receipt that came with the item. If you don't have a receipt, provide the order number or the sender's email address.

Customers will be given store credit in the form of a gift card. If you have the receipt and are within the guidelines of the No Receipt Return Policy, you may also have the option to receive cash back.

Best Buy

Return items with all contents, packaging, proof of purchase and ID.

Most exchanges can be made within 15 days of purchase.

Mobile phones and other carrier connectable devices may be returned or exchanged within 14 days for a full refund.

Almost every purchase made throughout November and December can be returned through January 15, 2015.

Purchases made between Nov.1 – Dec. 31, 2014 have an extended return period through January 15, 2015, excluding items purchased with a third-party contract such as mobile phone carrier contracts, DirecTV, etc.

Target

Most unopened items in new condition and returned within 90 days will receive a refund or exchange.

Some items have a modified return policy noted on the receipt or packing slip.

Items that are opened or damaged or do not have a packing slip or receipt may be denied a refund or exchange.

All bundled items must be returned with all components for a full refund. Bundle components may not all have the same return policy. Please check your packing slip for details.

Open music, movies, video games and software cannot be returned, but may be exchanged at the store for the same title, for the same or different gaming platform.

Items purchased between Nov. 1 and Dec. 25 are subject to a 30-day return period that starts Dec. 26.

Gift receipts allow recipients of gifts to receive Target GiftCard refunds when they return the items.

J.C. Penney

Items returned with a receipt are eligible for exchange or refund of the purchase price on the original method of payment.

Items returned with a gift receipt are eligible for exchange or refund at the gift receipt price in the form of a jcp gift card. Some rules apply.

Items returned to J.C. Penney without a receipt are eligible for exchange or refund at the item's lowest selling price within the last 45 days issued in the form of a merchandise return voucher.

Sears

Items must be returned in original packaging, with original receipt, for a refund or exchange.

The number of days from purchase that you have to return merchandise varies depending upon the item.

Select items purchased between 11/9/14 and 12/24/14 will have extended return periods as follows:

Items which typically have a 30-day return period under the standard return policy may be returned through 1/24/15.

Items which typically have a 60-day return period under the standard return policy may be returned through the later of 1/24/15 or 60 days from purchase date.

Exceptions: Floor care equipment, vacuums, major home appliances, sewing machines, water treatment, plumbing, heating equipment, and items with a 90-day standard return period are not covered by the extended Holiday Return Policy.

Toys"R"Us

Will accept returns made within 90 days of the purchase date for most items when accompanied by an in-store receipt.

Items must be returned, in new, or like-new condition, and in its original packaging, and with all paperwork including manuals, assembly instructions and your in-store receipt, as well as all accessories to ensure full credit.

If original payment was made by cash, checks (after 7 days) or debit card, refund will be given in cash.

If original payment was made by check (within the last 7 days), or merchandise credit, refund will be given in merchandise credit.

Purchases charged to a charge card will result in credit to that card.

If you are returning an item using a gift receipt or .com packing slip, your refund will be in the form of a merchandise credit.
