Baird Brothers truck driver injured in turnpike crash

Posted: Updated:

State troopers say the driver of a truck from a Canfield lumber company is lucky to be alive following a crash in Portage County along the Ohio Turnpike.

Investigators tell 21News that a Baird Brothers truck ran into the back of a tractor trailer that had a flat tire and was attempting to pull off the turnpike just before 9 a.m. Tuesday.

The driver of the Baird truck was flown by medical helicopter to Cleveland Metro Hospital with injuries described as serious, but not life threatening.

Troopers say the driver, whose name has not been released, was following too closely. However, the investigation continues and no citation has been issued.

Authorities say if he hadn't been wearing a seat belt, he may have been killed in the crash.

At least one lane of traffic was maintained during the investigation, except for a short time when all three westbound lanes of the were temporarily closed to allow the helicopter to transport the victim.
