Investigators believe an electrical short may be responsible for the fire that damaged three vehicles in Mill Creek Park, Thursday afternoon.

Authorities were called to a parking lot in the flats area of the park where a Chevy Cavalier and two SUVs were burning not far from the Silver Bridge.

The flames first erupted in the Cavalier and spread to the SUVs which were parked along side of the Chevy.

"I'm walking back from over there and we see some smoke and I thought honestly that it was just a grill going on then all of a sudden this woman is like my car is on fire," said Clayton Bond, whose SUV was burned in the fire.

The gas tank of the Cavalier ruptured, damaging the car extensively.

The woman and her friend, say they were getting their kids out of the car when a fuse shorted.

"Next thing you know you see fire through the vents so I just got the kids and got them as far away as I could," said Amber Melnik of Youngstown.

The owner of the Cavalier reported to fire officials that she noticed a short in the car's cigarette lighter prior to the fire. Investigators believe that's what may have sparked the blaze.

"She had a short where the cigarette lighter is, yesterday, so she knew she had a problem and it escalated to this," said Youngstown Battalion Chief Ron Russo.

No one was injured.

Firefighters say that since there are no hydrants in the area, trucks needed to haul water to the site.
