Government grants $420,000 for new Niles fire truck

Posted: Updated:
NILES, Ohio -

There are nearly $420,000 in new federal resources to help the Niles Fire Department purchase a new truck.

The funding is provided through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants Program under the Department of Homeland Security. AFG helps ensure the protection and safety of firefighters and other first responders.

The fire department applied for a grant in December and are now in the very early preliminary stages of obtaining a new vehicle. The city is working on a way to come up with a five percent match to the grant.

Lieutenant John Stevens of the Niles Fire Department said they are currently unsure what type of vehicle the department will acquire and will probably create a committee in order to decide.
