NILES, Ohio - The second threat since the start of classes this school year not only brought the cancellation of all classes in Niles on Tuesday, it is also bringing changes that will effect students and parents.

The Niles City Schools cancelled classes Tuesday after receiving an unspecified threat that morning.

Parents were notified of the cancellation by way of automated robocalls from the school.

Just one day after the start of the school year, Niles City Schools had to cancel classes after receiving two bomb threats.

School officials say they are working with the Niles Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. According to a statement issued by the school district, the agencies are actively and aggressively pursuing what information they have.

As a result of the threats, school administrators announced on Tuesday that until further notice, students in grades 6-12 at Niles Middle School and Niles McKinley High School will not be permitted to bring book bags to school.

Students in after school activities who need to bring a gym bag will have these bags searched upon arrival and they will be stored in a central location until the end of the day. Also, all purses and lunch bags will be searched when students enter their school building, just like a regular security check would take place at a ballpark or when entering a courthouse.

“We understand this is a huge inconvenience and if parents or guardians are not comfortable having their child’s personal belongings searched, they should not send them to school with anything except their school materials,” said Superintendent Ann Marie Thigpen.

In the past, similar threats resulted in charges of inducing panic and making terrorist threats.

"I do think something at the federal level, at the state level, needs to happen to people who think it's a joke to call in threats to schools," Thigpen said.

According to the Superintendent, the Niles Police Department has cleared all buildings and classes will resume on Wednesday.

Band Night and all after-school activities scheduled for Tuesday evening will be held as originally scheduled.
