YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -  Just add water and chill. It's a recipe for winter fun at Mill Creek MetroParks.

Workers have installed a water tight liner over the volleyball courts that will be flooded when it becomes cold enough freeze over.

Then, for the first time in fourteen years, ice skating will return to the Wick Recreation Area.

A grant from the Julianna Kurinka Trust allowed the park system to turn the volleyball courts into a platform for an ice skating rink.

The liner was not installed until Wednesday because of unseasonably high temperatures this past fall.

Park officials were concerned that the liner would become damaged if it was exposed to the environment for a long time without being covered by ice.

The former ice rink was torn out of the Wick Recreation Area after the park decided against opening it in 2002 when the cost of replacing corroded pipes became cost prohibitive.

The park has allowed ice skating at the Lily Pond over the past two winters, but officials say the activities are limited by the weather, since temperatures must be cold enough to produce ice that is thick enough to allow safe skating.

The new rink won't open until there are sustained freezing temperatures because it is mother-nature dependent, with-out a refrigeration unit, making costs more manageable.

The park will use existing seating and court lighting at the venue. Skaters will need to bring their own skates.

There will also be sled riding, a fire pit and an upgraded concession stand with more options for food and beverages.

There is no charge for ice skating or sled riding.
