Animal rights advocates staged a rally Thursday at the court hearing for the Warren man accused of performing sex acts with his two dogs.
The group wants to raise awareness about Senate Bill 195, which would make bestiality a crime in Ohio. Salvador Rendon pleaded not guilty to a charge of animal cruelty. The demonstrators say research shows that people who abuse animals often go on to commit other crimes.
"So to pass SB 195 is important not just for the animals, but for the entire community and the entire state," said Linda Hernandez of the Cleveland Animal Rescue Exchange.
It's alleged that Rendon performed sex acts with a male and female dogs several times over a five- or six-year period.
The judge set bond at $1,500 for Rendon and ordered that he be placed under electronically monitored house arrest and have no contact with animals.
Senate Bill 195 is currently in committee in the state legislature.
