LIBERTY TWP, Ohio - A thirty-year-old man is being held in the Trumbull County jail without bond for the murder of his grandfather in Liberty Township on Sunday.

Branden Cagley is accused of fatally shooting 82-year old James Phillips.

Trumbull 9-1-1 received calls shortly before 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon from family members who told dispatchers that a man had been shot at a home on Lucretia Drive.

One of the calls came from Cagley,  who said that he shot his grandfather in the chest to protect his grandmother.

The victim's wife also called and told dispatchers that her grandson shot her husband because he was going to beat her.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been called in to process evidence at the scene.

Liberty twp. police chief Richard Tisone says police are treating the case as a homicide.

He adds Cagley will be charged with homicide, but says those charges will go before a grand jury.

Cagley surrendered to police without incident.

Police say this is the first time they've been called to the residence.
