NEWTON TWP, Ohio - A Newton Falls police officer put his life on the line to save an amputee trapped in a house fire.

Sgt. Brian Foor was first on the scene after dispatchers received a call that a fire had broken out on the 500 block of Ophelia at around 11:30 p.m. Thursday.

Foor, a former firefighter, entered the burning home through the front door and crawled under the heavy smoke on his hands and knees.

In the living room, he found 68-year-old Keith Shafer sitting in his wheelchair, surrounded by the smoke.

Foor was able to pull Shafer to safety.

Shafer, whose leg was amputated last October, was conscious and responding when he was taken to the hospital.

Everyone was out of the home when an oxygen tank in the house began to leak, fueling the fire.

Investigators are still working to find the cause of the fire, which they believe started in the bedroom.

Crews from three other fire departments were also called to assist Newton Falls battle the flames.
