COLUMBIANA, Ohio - A New Waterford teen is dead following a crash involving suspected high speed and alcohol.
According to the Lisbon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol the fatal crash occurred around 12:32 a.m. Friday at the corner of Creek and Metz Roads in Unity Township, Columbiana County.
18-year-old Jacob Chamberlain of East Palestine was driving the 2004 Chevrolet Impala when it went left of center, traveled off the left side of the roadway and struck a ditch, then a tree and overturned.
Chamberlain was wearing his seat belt and according to friends did not appear to be seriously hurt.
Passengers, 21-year-old Tyler Barnes and 18-year-old Timothy Walton were not wearing seat belts and were trapped in the car according to witnesses who arrived on the scene to help.
Ryan Morris passed the crash scene on his way home from Boardman and was the first to stop, call 911, and give assistance. It was so dark out, he initially had no idea the two passengers were his friends.
"We flipped the car over to try to get them out because they were just asking for help. We tried to pry the door open to get them out and we were just too afraid to move them after we got the door open because we didn't want to hurt them," Morris said.
Darrell Wooten is still in shock from the tragedy and returned to the crash scene to remember his friend, "We flipped the car back over on it's side, we tried ripping the door off and just speaking to them. Trying to comfort them and keep them with us the best we can."
Walton was a senior at Crestview High School and died just days before he was set to graduate.
"Last night was our senior awards ceremony and Tim attended in his cap and gown and he did receive a certificate as a vocational completer," said Crestview High School Principal, Lynda Dickson. "We were very proud of him. He worked hard to earn his high school diploma."
Walton had even secured a job as a welder that he would start upon graduation.
Now classmates, teachers and others are being offered grief counseling on Saturday beginning at 9am at Crestview High School at the Performing Arts Center.
Something to help friends, classmates and teachers move forward with life, while cherishing Timothy Walton's memory.
The investigation into the crash is on-going.
