OSP: Failing to yield killed 206 in Ohio last year

Posted: Updated:
WARREN, Ohio -

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is urging drivers to exercise more caution on the road after traffic accidents have spiked.

Troopers report 49,473 crashes caused by drivers who failed to yield for motorists with the right-of-way in 2015.

Those numbers break down to 1,188 failure to yield crashes in Mahoning County during that period, 803 in Trumbull County, and 348 in Columbiana County according to the Highway Patrol.

That number is up nine percent from 2014.

OSP reports that of those crashes, 206 people were killed and 28, 857 others were injured.

“Traffic can be frustrating, but that's no excuse to endanger yourself and other drivers,” said Lt. Brian Hold, Warren OSP Post Commander. “It's always best for all motorists to remain calm and yield for the other vehicles that have the right-of-way.”

A detailed statistical analysis of failure to yield crashes is available through this link.
