SHENANGO TWP., Mercer Co., Pa. - Authorities found human remains in a shallow grave on property off of West Middlesex Road in Shenango Township, Mercer County.

Sharon Police Chief Gerald Smith and Shenango Township Police Chief Jason Newton spoke to reporters Wednesday night about what they have been calling an "active major crime scene."

The police chiefs said that the remains are from one body. 

Investigators have an idea of how long the body has been there but they are not disclosing that information at this time. 

The scene is still active and will be active as tests are run to determine the identity of the human remains. 

Officers are not calling this a homicide at this point.

Sharon, Shenango Township, Pennsylvania State Police and search dogs have been scouring the property along Route 318 since Tuesday afternoon.

Investigators tell 21 News they are searching the property which contains a complex including a house, barn and several other buildings.

21 News reporter Christa Lamendola says she observed a forensic anthropologist on the scene.

A backhoe has also been brought onto the property, the entrance of which bears a "no trespassing" sign.

Police tell 21 News more than 30 investigators are on scene.
