State Rep: Charter schools impact local school districts

Posted: Updated:

The Ohio Democratic Party says for-profit charter schools are impacting public schools across the state.

The group says that Mahoning County taxpayers shell out more than $2 million a year to support the charter school tax.

Lawmakers went on to say that statewide $1 billion are taken away from local school districts to support for-profit charter schools that have little oversight.

“We are at the heart of the debate on how we move forward with charter schools in Ohio,” said State Representative Michele Lepore-Hagan. “We just want to make sure that our children and our families are treated fairly. Unfortunately, that is not what we've seen today. Highly disinvested school districts, similar to those in Youngstown, are punished because of the surrounding poverty traps that exist.”

Boardman Senator Joe Schiavoni, and State Representative Michele Lepore-Hagan have both co-sponsored legislation in the House and Senate, calling for more state control over for-profit charter schools.
